Art Open

I have an installation, Materia Incarnation IV, at the Chicago Art Open at River East Art Center for the next few weeks. It previews tomorrow night.

Figure drawing

I drew from a live model today for the first time in a few years. What a rude awakening. I was/am very rusty.

First, one has to get back to seeing, not reducing to symbol. Second, one really has to focus on translating weight and the third dimension to paper. Both of these seem to interfere with easy pencil touch and line quality. My marks on the paper were all over the place and largely ineffective. My proportions and placement were off. And I found myself thinking too much and not looking enough.

I'll have to practice more. A lot more.

Inspiration: van Ruisdael's Wheatfields

Dutch Painter Jacob van Ruisdael's Wheatfields, c. 1670... What an inspiring composition: the land goes all the way in and the clouds come all the way out, yet with a leftward tilt/weighting from the trees, land banking to the left, and darkness of the right clouds that creates a circular motion.
